Essential Ocean Variables
To improve ocean observing efforts, ocean scientists have identified several key variables and have recommendations for best practices in data collection and management. These Essential Ocean Variables (EOVs) are identified based on their importance to research, feasibility to observe, and cost to collect.
CIOOS supports all EOVs identified by the Global Ocean Observing System (GOOS) and is part of Canada’s commitment to the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021 – 2030). As part of the Ocean Decade, we strive to make information more accessible, predictable, and engaging for all. CIOOS also supports emerging EOVs, such as microbes and marine debris. Contact us if you wish to contribute data, but do not see it in the list of EOVs.
