CIOOS History
2014
MEOPAR sponsors a workshop to develop best practices and a shared vision for nationally coordinated ocean data management in Canada. An Ocean Data Management Community of Practice (ODM CoP) is established with representatives from academia, NGOs and government.
An expert forum on ocean data management is held bringing together over fifty participants from government, academia, and industry to offer perspectives and best practices. The forum produces a report outlining the vision for a Canadian Integrated Ocean Observing System.

2017
Three investigative evaluations focused on cyberinfrastructure, observations and data, and visualizations are developed for the Canadian Integrated Ocean Observing System by the ODM CoP. These reports provide recommendations for moving the initiative from theory into practice.
Three regional associations from the Pacific, the St. Lawrence, and the Atlantic were created and funded jointly by the Department of Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) and MEOPAR.

2019
DFO and MEOPAR announced the first cycle of funding of the Canadian Integrated Ocean Observing System to pilot the program.
CIOOS website launched with two national data discovery tools.
DFO, MEOPAR, and the Tula Foundation announced Cycle 2 funding, an extended pilot phase of CIOOS, for an additional two years.

DFO and MEOPAR announced the inception of Phase 1.0 of the Canadian Integrated Ocean Observing System.
An Implementation Plan was produced to complement the Strategic Plan and coordinate work plans across CIOOS.
Funding was renewed for an additional cycle, until March 2024.

2023
An Advisory Committee for CIOOS was established to help provide new opportunities and strategic direction.
CIOOS is recognized as a regional alliance of the Global Ocean Observing System (GOOS).
CIOOS continues to work towards sustainability and steady improvement.
